U-Dig Fossils has grown a world-wide reputation as a preeminent destination for fossil finders. Our family-operated quarry, located in Utah's West Desert, offers access into the Wheeler Shale, an impressively rich Middle Cambrian fossil formation that yields large numbers of common trilobites such as Elrathia kingii and Asaphiscus wheeleri as well as many rarer species of trilobites and other organisms that thrived in the oceans of roughly 500 million years ago. Discovery of new Cambrian species within the Wheeler Formation continues to this day.
Visitors enjoy not just the amazing fossil-finding opportunities afforded by our quarry, but also its beautiful setting, one that usually offers sightings of the wild horses of Swasey and an exceptionally clear sky that makes the area a perfect vantage point for astronomical events such as eclipses and meteor showers.
Rockhounds enjoy making the most of our location, only a short distance from public access into the trilobite-fossil-bearing Marjum and Weeks formations, and within day-trip's drive from opportunities to find Topaz, Dugway Geodes, Sunstone, and Obsidian (including mahogany, snowflake, and Apache tears).
Our position also makes for a convenient excursion for those exploring any of Utah's "Mighty Five" national parks as well as those visiting Nevada's Great Basin National Park, only about an hour and a half away. Many combine a visit to U-Dig with any of Utah's many geological and paleontological attractions as well as visits to the many great Green River fossil quarries in Wyoming.
